A casino (or casin) is a gambling establishment, a place where people can play various games of chance for money. It is also a popular form of entertainment and a major source of revenue in many countries. The modern casino traces its origins to the second half of the 19th century, when the first legal casinos were established in Europe.

Today, there are more than 300 casinos worldwide. They range from small, local operations to large resorts offering a full spectrum of gaming choices and lavish amenities. Most casinos are heavily guarded to prevent theft and other criminal activity. They usually employ a physical security force and a specialized department that operates the casino’s closed circuit television system. In addition, some casinos have catwalks over the tables and slot machines that allow surveillance personnel to look down directly on the players. Despite these measures, casinos are not immune to crime.
