Once the initial bet is paid, the player is called the “active player”. He or she will be responsible for placing the correct number of chips in the pot, as defined by the table.

The final betting period is known as the showdown. When the dealer deals the final cards, all the players’ hands are shown, and the highest hand is awarded the pot. This can be won by the best hand, or if the players have more than one hand, the pot will be split between the best and lowest hands.

Players can bet any combination of cards from their hand or the cards they have already discarded. The first bet is called the ante, and is usually a small bet. The ante amount is determined by the table. It is often $1 or $5.

Before the cards are dealt, the dealer will shuffle the cards. Depending on the game, the cards can be face-up or face-down. During the deal, the dealer must also offer the shuffled pack to the opponent for cutting.
